How should I take care of my living herb plant?
When you bring your plant home, simply remove the outer sleeve and place your plant in a shallow dish. Then add a little water to the dish whenever the soil feels dry and place in a sunny spot. Your plant should stay fresh for 2-3 weeks or more!

Our living herb plants are intended to be kept indoors. With a little care you can expect your plant to last in its original pot for 2-3 weeks.

Can I replant my living herb plant outside?
Our plants are intended to be kept indoors and used within 2-3 weeks of purchase. However, many customers have successfully transplanted them outdoors. The specifics will vary, depending on the herb and your location, but here is an overview:
Herbs like full sun (6+ hours), and they will need some supplemental watering when the weather is hot and dry. In hot climates tender herbs will appreciate a bit of afternoon shade.
The best time of year to transplant herbs outdoors is in the spring once temperatures are above freezing. Basil and Thai Basil are very sensitive to cold and should be planted later. Wait until low temperatures are at least 50˚F before planting Basil outdoors.

When Basil turns black, it usually means it got too cold. You should NEVER store fresh Basil of any kind, whether it’s a living plant or packaged herbs, in the refrigerator.
If your living plant has just a few black leaves, pinch the affected leaves off, and make sure it doesn’t get too cold again.

Our plants are grown to be eaten, so we encourage you to use them within 2-3 weeks of purchase. But if your plant isn’t thriving, here are the most common issues:
Not enough sun: herbs like a lot of sun, so be sure you’ve placed your plant in a sunny spot in your home.
Not enough water: make sure your plant isn’t drying out. We recommend watering your plant whenever the soil feels dry, usually every 2-3 days
Too much water: but be sure not to overwater your plant. It only needs a little water in the dish whenever the soil feels dry. Never leave your plant sitting in standing water for more than an hour.
Too cold: living herb plants do not like the cold, especially Basil! Don’t leave your plants sitting in a cold car and never refrigerate them.

Why can’t I feed your organic herbs to my butterflies?
All of our living plants are grown 100% organically and are free of artificial pesticides. However, we do use a limited number of USDA-approved, organic methods to control pests. This includes applying beneficial microbes and natural extracts that are completely safe for human consumption, but not always safe for caterpillars.
If a plant is purchased for caterpillar feeding, the leaves should be thoroughly rinsed, soaked, and rinsed again before feeding. After rinsing, try feeding to a small number of caterpillars first before feeding it to the whole group.
If transplanting outdoors, rinse thoroughly with a garden sprayer after planting, and/or plant just before a big rain.

Is there a best by date on the packaging?
Is there a best by date on the packaging?
We use Julian dates to track the day our products are packaged on. You’ll find the date printed on the front of the package, along with the lot code and country of origin. The lot code is listed first, and the Julian date is listed second in the form of XX XXX. The first two digits are the last numbers of the year, and the final three digits are the day of that year.

Are there any allergens in the facility where your produce is grown?
Our shared lines and facilities are free of common allergens, including milk, eggs, wheat, soy, shellfish, tree nuts, and peanuts.
Our growing process does utilize ladybugs as beneficial insects–a common practice in organic agriculture. Customers with allergic reactions to this type of insect may want to take extra care in rinsing the herbs before ingesting.
